MBA Matters – February 2009
In this edition, we welcome new students to the MBA programme, alert you to our next Network meeting, and give details of two Internet initiatives.
New Students
We are pleased to welcome the following new students to the MBA programme:
Allan Jenkins Laursen – Horsens
Allan has started with Organisational Behaviour.
Rune Karlsen – Copenhagen
Rune works at Kulturcenter and has chosen Human Resource Management as his first course.
Kent Nymark – Vissenbjerg
Kent is our Marketing Coordinator and he joins the programme by selecting Negotiation as course number one.
Mette Flansmose
Mette is Vice-President Project Management and Process Control with Exiqon in Vedbæk. After having chosen Organisational Behaviour, Mette soon added Economics to her portfolio.
Henrik Julin
National Director of Euro Academy (Danmark), Henrik is also a member of our Advisory Board. Like Allan and Mette, Henrik is cutting his teeth, as we say in England, on Organisational Behaviour.
We wish our new students, and indeed all our students, every success with their MBA studies!
Network Meeting
Our next meeting will be at C4 Development Centre, Hillerød, at 17:00 on Thursday 12 March. C4 is at:
Krakasvej 17
3400 Hillerød
There will be the opportunity for debate and networking, and the themes will be ‘Negotiating during the recession’ and ‘Tricks and Ploys in Negotiation’. All members will have the opportunity of participating in some fun role plays if desired.
We hope that you will attend, but please let us know in advance as we need to arrange refreshments.
Internet Initiatives
NemFamilie
Martin Andersen and Jacob Senderovitz have been working hard on a new website. They write:
Martin has promised to tell us more about the site, and in the meantime do visit NemFamilie, explore it, and join.
Edinburgh Business School, Scandinavian Network Group on Facebook
Kent has established a Network Group on Facebook. This is intended to be a way of keeping members in touch with each other, and to build out network presence.
Kent was able to contact a number of EBS students and graduates with invitations to join, and he continues his work in this area. If you use Facebook please do not wait for an invitation but apply to join the group without further ado. If you do not use Facebook, why not give it a try and join us?
News from EBS, Edinburgh
EBS have launched a new version of their website at www.ebsglobal.net. They state that the new site aims to make navigation simpler and more intuitive for users while being visually more stimulating and welcoming using bold colour and images taken from inside the business school.
We are looking at it to see how we can improve our website too.
EBS buy Adam Smith’s home
Adam Smith, the author of ‘The Wealth of Nations’ is one of Scotland’s most famous sons, and the originator of the ‘If… …then’ conditional, well known to students of Negotiation.
“In recognition of the heritage significance of the building and the School’s commitment to serving the community, Panmure House will be carefully refurbished to provide a centre for education and research in the field of economics and related subjects. It will also provide a venue for open lectures, exhibitions and events. The project has international significance and will enhance EBS’s global economic and educational links.”
This historical building must be worth a visit when you are next in Edinburgh.
Calling all Pilots
Well, strictly not, but we are looking for an organisation to pilot our Strategic Negotiation workshop. This course is an advanced version of our very successful MBA Level workshop, and is based on the EBS module Strategic Negotiation.
Strategic Negotiation is a practical and applied workshop, intended for managers whose negotiations are high-value, complex, multi-level and often multi-party, or who wish to negotiate at this level. Tactical negotiation skills are insufficient because of the complexity of negotiations, making strategic negotiation skills vital for organisational success.
The workshop addresses the questions:
- How do I prepare for a negotiation that is likely to be filled by arguments for
and against competing options, and influenced by events outside my control?
- What if there is more than one player negotiating with a client, and there are ifferences of preferences within the client’s team?
- How do we deal with uncertainties about the balance of power in the negotiation?
- What if there are there are multiple stakeholders with varying power, interests and influence at work?
Utilising sophisticated analysis and diagnostic techniques participants develop a Negotiation Agenda to prepare for a complex, multi-party case to be negotiated during the second day of the workshop.
The author, Gavin Kennedy, has developed model from his many years of experience in negotiation consultancy, which has been confirmed through use where it matters; in the world of organisations run by real people. This model forms the basis of the workshop, and it can be applied, and adapted to, a wide range of business situations.
Format: Two days
09:00 – 17:00
The public price for Strategic Negotiation will be Kr. 15.000 per participant but my colleague Petter Tømmerberg and I will offer a participating organisation the pilot course at Kr. 4.000 per participant if they can provide 12 attendees.
Please contact me for further information.
Stein Bagger
Several members have been very kind in complimenting us on how we dealt with the potential fall-out from Stein Bagger’s EBS MBA claim. The credit for the response has to go to our Advisory Board member Jesper B.T. Henriksen for his excellent advice, and for his speed in sending out press releases. Jesper is a professional media consultant and I cannot recommend him too highly – Jesper@semantix.dk
Many thanks, too, to my colleague Kent Nymark for his good advice and participation in the Fyens Stifstidende interview.
The value of networking indeed!
